  17. <p>    She is an 82-year-old grandmother from Kansas who turned
  18. to art late in life, but one look at ELIZABETH LAYTON'S
  19. drawings, and no one would be tempted to call her "Grandma
  20. Layton." Her self-portraits reflect such contemporary curses as
  21. homelessness, AIDS and racism. Layton is now the focus of a
  22. one-woman show at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum
  23. of American Art. She credits her artwork with ending a 30-year
  24. struggle with depression. "If I don't get a chance to draw for
  25. a while, I get cranky and my husband says, `Go draw a picture.'"
